The Challenge

British Sugar, a major UK sugar manufacturer was undergoing a significant transformation to become a leaner, more cost-conscious operation. They needed frontline managers who could go beyond delivering results. These leaders needed to engage and inspire their teams, even in times of change.

The goal was to create a consistent foundation of leadership behaviours across operational sites and build a confident, self-aware, high-performing management community. The challenge was delivering this in a way that respected operational pressures without removing managers from the day-to-day for long periods.

Our Solution

Inspirational Group designed and delivered a high-impact, multi-modular programme grounded in three core principles: build self-awareness, develop others, and raise performance expectations.

The programme was structured into three modules over five months, with time for reflection and application in between:

Module 1: Personal Effectiveness

A three-day residential focused on leadership identity, emotional intelligence, communication, and personal impact. Strengths Deployment Inventory (SDI) and 360° feedback tools were used to provide insight into individual drivers and workplace perception.

Module 2: Leading High Performance

A two-day module shifting focus from self to team. Leaders explored how to empower direct reports, have courageous conversations, and coach for performance. Professional actors ran immersive simulations to practice tackling real-world challenges.

Module 3: Raising the Bar

A one-day residential emphasising reflection, recommitment, and accountability. Leaders reviewed progress through repeated 360° feedback, identified growth areas, and committed to delivering sustained value. The module reinforced peer networks and continuous improvement.

Impact

The programme created a powerful shift in mindset, behaviour, and leadership capability across the organisation. Managers who once viewed their role through a task-focused lens began to see themselves as leaders responsible for setting direction, enabling others, and creating accountability. The impact was greater cohesion, increased ownership, and a stronger contribution to the company’s cost-efficiency strategy.

Key Results:

  • Shift from task management to people leadership.
  • Increased confidence, clarity, and ownership among new managers.
  • Greater cohesion and leadership capability across the organisation.
  • Accelerated business value through better leadership sooner.
  • “People tell me that I’m a totally different person now.”

  • “Before I was looking after a team, now I am their Manager!”
