Developing Resilient Incident Leaders
At a glance
Goal
Develop personal resilience and self-awareness to support effective leadership during high-pressure incidents.
Scope
Leaders responsible for managing incidents.
Delivery
Bespoke, face-to-face programme delivered over three days.
Outcomes
Increased self-awareness, improved leadership confidence under pressure, and greater readiness to step into the Incident Manager role.
The Challenge
This UK utilities organisation identified a growing risk in its incident management capability. A small number of experienced Incident Managers were repeatedly relied upon, with several approaching retirement. To ensure business continuity, the organisation needed to prepare a wider group of leaders to step confidently into the role.
Leaders also needed support to develop the emotional intelligence, decision-making and communication skills required to operate effectively under pressure. Building leadership resilience was critical to maintaining safe and effective incident management.
Our Solution
Inspirational Group designed a bespoke leadership programme focused on developing self-awareness, resilience and leadership effectiveness during incidents. The programme emphasised behavioural insight and practical application, helping leaders understand how they respond under stress and how to lead others in demanding conditions.
Delivered face-to-face over three days, the programme blended psychometric tools, experiential learning and simulated challenges to mirror the realities of incident leadership.
Day One: Self-Awareness
Participants explored leadership preferences using MBTI and the ‘In the Grip’ profile, focusing on how behaviour shifts under pressure and how to manage personal triggers effectively.
Day Two: Conditions for Success
This module examined the role of the Incident Leader and the importance of creating an effective operating environment. Participants developed stakeholder awareness, problem-solving capability using the GISAR approach, and core communication skills.
Day Three: Leadership Resilience
The final module focused on flexing leadership style, building resilience and delivering clear, concise communication. Participants reflected on personal effectiveness and committed to practical actions to strengthen their leadership under pressure.
Impact
The programme strengthened leadership readiness for incident management roles by developing self-awareness, confidence and communication capability. Participants left better equipped to manage pressure, lead others effectively and contribute to continuity in incident leadership.
- Improved leadership confidence under pressure
- Greater consistency in incident leadership capability
