The Fax Club Experiment: Rona McKenzie on Disappearing to Reconnect

It began in December 2023. A LinkedIn post by David Hieatt, inviting 100 people to take part in an anonymous year-long experiment in counter-intuitive thinking and community building. Curious, I signed up. And I never dreamt it would lead to this.

The Fax Club Experiment concept was simple. 52 weeks. 52 questions. 100 mavericks. 1 anonymous community. Every Friday a single, counterintuitive question arrived by fax – yes, we all went out and bought fax machines! We answered anonymously through an online channel, modern technology mixed with analogue fax. Our responses were attributed only to faceless numbers. For 52 weeks we read, reflected, and responded, sharing deeply in our anonymous world. We voted on the answers that we liked the best, conversations sparked, and the platform changed. Some dropped out, whilst others were dropped.

By February 2025, 50 of us remained. We met for the first time, walking into a roomful of new faces. In our minds we had learnt so much about so many, we just didn’t know who owned each story. A question was asked – if a roomful of strangers were to write a book, how would they do it? And from that day, 32 of us persisted and our book has emerged. It’s a beautiful collection of reflections and insights into what can happen when technology is stripped away.

The Fax Club Experiment is on sale on Amazon (paperback and Kindle) from Thursday 2nd October, and we are beyond excited to see our experiment in print. We think you’ll enjoy the read.

  • “The Fax Club Experiment reveals something many of us know inherently to be true, but struggle to admit: we don’t need more technology to live more connected lives, we need less. By stripping back to an obsolete method of communication, 100 strangers were able to cut through our modern noise to reveal profound wisdom, authenticity, vulnerability, and true human potential. This experiment shows just how urgently we must assess which aspects of our digital age are beneficial, and which are actually counterintuitive to our flourishing. Sometimes the only way forward is to look to the past.”
