4 ways you can increase your job security post-pandemic

Following a tumultuous couple of years, many leaders & managers – and those with aspirations to become a leader or manager – may have found their career path rather disrupted. In the UK alone a reduction in economic output of more than 10% has contributed to a swathe of company liquidations, market shrinkage and massive job losses.

History shows that this affects a very large proportion of those in leadership & management positions, even if their own job or organisation has not been directly damaged.

Whilst many have lost their jobs, those who haven’t now face stiffer competition for any promotion or new position from those leaders looking to get back into work and find a role.

So what can you do to secure your role or make sure that your career progression continues in an upward trajectory? Here are four ideas:

1. Take a long, hard look in the mirror

If you were looking to hire a new, rising star as a leader & manager…. Would you hire you? If you were a house and up for sale, what would be the key features that would make a prospective buyer’s eyes light up?

2. What have you learned in the last couple of years that makes you truly ready for the future?

Continuing the house analogy, have you re-decorated recently? Does everything look in good shape? Or is some of it a bit worn and tatty around the edges? Have you continued your learning and development in recent years? Or have you been ‘too busy’?

3. When did you last analyse and update your CV and Profile?

If it was more than a couple of years ago, you may have become complacent and sure of your place. Is that wise? Given that so many experienced leaders & managers have lost their jobs during the pandemic and are out there looking to get back into a role, maybe even at a lower level… do you feel that secure?

4. Are you qualified to manage and lead at the level you should be?

A majority of managers & leaders are not really professionally qualified to be one. They may well be experienced, they may well be qualified in another skill area or discipline – but as a leader? One of the best ways to improve your career prospects as well as your job security is to become professionally qualified – especially at the level you aspire to, not just the one you occupy now.

Many of those leaders who have lost their job are quickly recognising the competitive advantage of having a graduate or even post-graduate qualification and of achieving Chartered Manager status, as they search for a new opportunity.

How about you?
