Networking – Let’s Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of welcoming Irene Magistro to our first Leadership Book Club of the year to talk about her book, Intellectual Stripper. While the title certainly sparks curiosity, it’s the book’s core message that left the biggest impact, urging us to strip away pretences, biases, and fears to reveal an authentic, sustainable approach to networking. During our discussion, Irene emphasised that modern networking requires adaptability, self-awareness, and a true understanding of one’s motivations.

As I moved through the book, I couldn’t help but feel that Irene was providing validation and understanding for the networking challenges I’ve experienced myself, beautifully bringing to life the scientific reasons why so many of us struggle to put ourselves out there in the first place.

1. Find Your Purpose in Networking

In a world obsessed with “likes” and “followers,” it’s easy to get swept up in the hype of building an ever-expanding network. But do you truly know why you are doing it? And are you actually making meaningful connections? Irene highlights that effective networking begins with clarity of purpose and the need to let go of anything that doesn’t serve it. What do you seek through networking, and what are you ready to give?

2. Relationships Over Sales

It may seem obvious, but when the primary focus is making a sale or hitting a target, the opportunity to build a genuine connection often falls by the wayside. Humans are naturally wired to avoid strangers, but we are also adept at detecting inauthentic energy. When we hide our authentic selves behind a corporate mask, we inadvertently deny ourselves the opportunity to truly connect with others. Irene encourages us to let go of labels, prejudgments, and the illusion of talent; instead, we should replace them with genuine care, empathy, active listening, preparation, assertiveness, and enjoyment.

3. Reframing Networking Challenges

Early in the book, Irene highlights the role that fear plays in either contributing to or preventing networking success. How many times have you avoided reaching out to someone because you feared they would decline your offer to connect? How often have you dismissed a potential connection simply because your first attempt didn’t go as planned? If you’ve struggled to connect with someone, turning inward and examining what you’re offering them could provide valuable answers.

Irene reminds us that sustainable networking isn’t about immediate results but about consistent effort and creative engagement. We need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Turning Networking into a Meaningful Practice

Ultimately, networking isn’t about quick wins or amassing a huge follower count. It’s about consistent effort, self-awareness, and a willingness to embrace discomfort. By shifting our mindset from seeking immediate results to fostering genuine, long-term connections, we can turn networking into a fulfilling and meaningful practice.

With that in mind, here are three actionable steps to enhance your networking approach today:

  1. Read Intellectual Stripper – Irene’s book offers profound insights into the evolving nature of networking and how to navigate it with authenticity.
  2. Reflect on Your Current Network – Take time to understand the purpose and potential of your connections. What gaps exist, and how can you address them?
  3. Reconnect with Courage – Identify someone you’ve struggled to connect with and find a creative way to re-engage. Persistence and thoughtful outreach can turn a “no” into a “not yet.”
