In an exciting recent episode of The Digital Download, Felicity Wingrove, Director of Coaching and Communication at Inspirational Group, shared her insights on “Mastering Language for Leadership Impact.” Fliss, a leading expert in psycholinguistics, delved into the powerful ways language can be a leader’s most effective tool to inspire, influence, and positive manage reputation and relationships.

The discussion kicked off with Fliss explaining why so many leaders struggle with communication, despite its critical role in their success. She emphasized that effective communication is not about speaking in the way we want to hear things but rather adapting our message to meet the listener’s needs. A skill, she noted, that requires self-awareness and an understanding of the personal biases that often shape our interactions.

A key takeaway was Fliss’ advice on working to achieve language “hygiene”—that is cleaning up one’s personal biases and filters to deliver messages clearly and authentically. She highlighted how leaders can harness emotionally resonant words and storytelling to connect deeply, while avoiding the pitfalls of jargon that can cloud understanding.

The session explored how leaders should take 100% responsibility for their message landing effectively. And Fliss shared techniques such as strategic word choices, with “even” a powerful addition when providing feedback to reduce the risk of the other party telling themselves (invented) stories about your intentions and beliefs.

Fliss also addressed the challenge of maintaining emotional intelligence in high-stress, high-visibility situations. Her advice? Stay truthful, authentic, and grounded. Leaders should communicate with candor, balancing transparency with empathy, especially during challenging moments.

For those who couldn’t attend, the full recording is available below, offering a chance to experience Fliss’ wisdom on how mastering language can significantly amplify a leader’s influence.
