What does good leadership really look like?

In our latest Inspirational Group Book Club, we were joined by Neil Jurd OBE, author of the best-selling The Leadership Book
and founder of Leader-Connect.

From his early days as a Gurkha Squadron Commander to his work with organisations like Virgin Media, the British Army, and Sanofi, Neil has distilled leadership into something refreshingly simple:
Be yourself—but with skill.

Hosted by Principal Coach Lesley Mourant, this live session was packed with practical insights, honest reflections, and the kind of leadership advice that sticks.

1. Leadership Is Simple—But Requires Courage

Neil opened the session with a message that cut through the noise: leadership doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s about consistency, clarity, and showing up—especially when it matters most.

“You don’t need to be extraordinary to lead. You just need to be real.”

At its core, leadership is a series of conscious choices, made under pressure. The best leaders don’t try to impress—they try to serve.

2. Let Go to Let Others Lead

Drawing on his military experience, Neil talked candidly about the moment he realised leadership wasn’t about being in control of everything.

His turning point came when he recognised that the people around him—his Ops Officer, Tech Warrant Officer, and Sergeant Major—didn’t need micromanaging. They needed space.

“When you step back and allow others to thrive, your whole team steps up.”

Trust, delegation, and the ability to allow are what separate effective leaders from overwhelmed ones.

3. Clarity of Purpose Drives Performance

Neil is a strong advocate for leading with purpose—not process. Whether you’re leading a team of cadets or a commercial organisation, a clear and compelling purpose is the ultimate motivational tool.

“Purpose cuts through complexity. When people know why they’re here, they give more.”

This doesn’t mean fancy mission statements—it means giving people a reason to care, and a vision worth showing up for.

4. Presence Over Perfection

When asked about what separates technical managers from inspiring leaders, Neil’s answer was striking: presence.

It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about being available, emotionally aware, and fully engaged with your team.

“Good leadership is a human thing. People don’t want perfection. They want connection.”
